Last Saturday, Bree and myself had a durian date before The Durian Season Finally Ends. Knowing that we have a girls’ night out together, Rachel from Shepherd’s Pie Singapore also kindly offered to send Bree and myself some Shepherd’s Pie.
Well, Shepherd’s Pie could be a comfort food too, and it’s not something you order only on St Patrick’s Day. But SHEPHERD’S PIE + DURIANS??? hahahaha only in Singapore.
Do you know the history of Shepherd’s pies? The history of Shepherd’s Pie dated right back to early 1800s in the United Kingdoms. Creative and frugal English housewives first invented Shepherd Pies by mixing leftovers with mashed potatoes, and then baked them into yummy pies to minimise wastage of food. The logic is apparently because “no baked food can taste bad”…which well, is kind of true. Subsequently, people regarded Shepherd’s Pies as comfort food and adapted them to their own countries and cultures.
So Bree and I thought, why not eat them before durians. And there you go. Haha!
Rachel’s Shepherd’s pies were really not bad! Here are some photos:
The pies taste as good as they look. It’s the first time we are eating shepherd pies with MSW durians too, and the combination wasn’t bad haha. I don’t think most people do this food combination anywhere else in the world. Just make sure you drink tons of water to hydrate, failing which you might end up with a bad sore throat.
When you cut the pies, you can see a casserole of succulent beef filling and vegetables topped with buttery mashed potatoes. yums!
We had the beef Shepherd’s Pies– to our surprise, there were sweet! We were rather surprised by the sugar rush. Never had sweet Shepherd’s Pies before.
Feel free to try Shepherd’s Pies and Durians together just like us– Head over to Shepherd’s Pie Singapore to place your order today!
